Facts about Panama

Climate

Panama invites you to discover a tropical paradise with average temperatures ranging from 27°C (81°F) to 32°C (90°F) year-round.

Enjoy two distinct seasons: the dry season (December to April), characterized by radiant blue skies and little rain, ideal for sunbathing on the Caribbean or Pacific beaches.

During the rainy season (May to November), experience nature’s exuberance with tropical downpours that refresh the atmosphere and allow you to appreciate the beauty of the waterfalls and rivers that abound in the country.

If you’re seeking a cooler climate, the highlands of Chiriquí, Bocas del Toro, and Veraguas await with temperatures ranging from 12°C to 15°C (54°F to 59°F), perfect for hiking, birdwatching, or enjoying rural tourism amidst breathtaking mountain landscapes.

Just a one-and-a-half-hour drive from Panama City, you’ll find the Anton Valley, an oasis of freshness surrounded by an extinct volcano, where you can enjoy a spring-like climate all year round.

Panama, located south of the hurricane belt, offers you the peace of mind to enjoy its beaches and outdoor activities without worries.

Don’t wait any longer to discover Panama, a destination that will captivate you with its diverse climate, lush nature, and rich culture.

Currency and Banking

Panama uses two legal tender currencies: the United States dollar (USD) and the Panamanian balboa (PAB).

The US dollar is the predominant currency and is used in most transactions. The balboa, which has the same value as the dollar, is mainly used for fractional coins.

Panama does not print banknotes, but it does mint its own coins in denominations of 50 cents, 25 cents, 10 cents, 5 cents, and 1 cent.

Banks in Panama are generally open Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, some until 6:00 PM. On Saturdays, the usual hours are from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. You will find banks throughout the country, including branches in the interior.

Visa, American Express, and MasterCard credit cards are widely accepted in most commercial establishments, such as hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, and stores.

If you want to obtain balboas in cash, you can withdraw money from ATMs (ATMs) located throughout the country or exchange your currency at reliable exchange houses, especially in Panama City and tourist areas.

Language and Population

Spanish is the official language, but most Panamanians are fluent in English.

According to the XII National Census of Population and Housing conducted in Panama in 2023, the country’s total population is 4,064,780 inhabitants.

Of this total, 50.4% are women, and 49.6% are men.

It is worth noting that this census revealed a significant increase in the Afro-descendant population in Panama, reaching 31.7% of the total.

Compared to the previous census conducted in 2010, Panama’s population has grown at an average annual rate of around 1.5%.

Public Services

Panama has a reliable electricity grid that covers the entire country.

The standard voltage is 110 volts AC, and the plugs are type A and B, compatible with those used in the United States and Japan.

The mains frequency is 60 Hz. It is recommended to bring adapters if your electronic devices use other types of plugs.

Panama’s communications system is one of the best in Latin America and highly sophisticated. It has mobile phone companies such as Claro, +Móvil, and Tigo, which offer wide coverage and convenient prepaid plans for tourists. In addition, there is widespread availability of mobile internet and Wi-Fi in hotels, restaurants, and public places.

Panama prides itself on having excellent quality drinking water, considered one of the purest in the world. It is safe to drink directly from the tap in most cities and populated areas. However, in some rural or remote areas, it is recommended to consume bottled water as a precaution. For more information, you can use mobile applications that report on water quality at different points in the country.

Entry and Exit Requirements

Most citizens do not require a visa to enter Panama, only a tourist card.

The tourist card can be purchased at the airport or from the airline before boarding the plane.

It is valid for 30 days and can be extended for two more months.

For more information on visa requirements, please visit the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Panama:

Frequently asked questions about Panama

The official language of Panama is Spanish. In tourist areas and places with a higher influx of foreigners, such as Panama City and Bocas del Toro, many people also speak English.

The best time to visit Panama depends on your preferences. If you are looking for dry and sunny weather, the dry season runs from December to April. If you want to enjoy the lushness of the rainforest and don’t mind the rain, the wet season runs from May to November.

To travel to Panama, most citizens need a valid passport with at least 6 months of remaining validity. A visa may also be required, depending on your nationality. We recommend checking with the Panamanian embassy or consulate in your country for more detailed information on visa requirements.

The clothes you pack will depend on the time of year you travel. In general, it is recommended to pack light and comfortable clothing, as well as a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. If you are going to hike or do outdoor activities, you will also need appropriate clothing and footwear.

Panama awaits you with its warm and sunny weather for most of the year. To make the most of your trip, we recommend packing light and comfortable clothing, such as cotton t-shirts, shorts or Bermuda shorts, and loose-fitting dresses or skirts. Don’t forget to include swimsuits, as Panama offers beautiful beaches and pools where you can cool off.

While casual and comfortable attire is appropriate for most activities in Panama, please note that in some places, such as offices or when visiting government offices, more formal attire is required. For these occasions, we recommend wearing long pants and a shirt or blouse with sleeves.

If you plan to visit the Chiriquí highlands, especially during the evening or early morning, we recommend bringing a light sweater or jacket as temperatures can be a bit chilly. We also recommend bringing comfortable walking shoes as you can enjoy beautiful hikes in this mountainous region.

Panama has a well-developed public transportation network, including buses, taxis, and the metro in Panama City. You can also rent a car to explore the country at your own pace.

I wholeheartedly recommend Katia (Kats Tours / Kats Private Tours) as your driver. Having a driver who shows up on time and is reliable is a game-changer. Katia is not only a dependable driver but also the owner of her own tour company. She provided us with an informative tour of the old city, recommended an excellent hotel and restaurant near the Adventure Zip Line, and even connected us with a friend who took us on a canoe trip to visit the Embera indigenous tribe. It was an unforgettable experience.

Katia,

Thank you so much for your help in making our trip to Panama one of the best travel experiences we've ever had. Your knowledge of Panama City and your country gave us a better understanding of how hard Panamanians have worked to bring Panama to where it is today. You made us feel like we were traveling with family. We hope to plan another trip to Panama soon. When we do, you will be the first person we call.

Thank you again!

Rick & Caroline Smith

Hi Katia, I hope all is well with you and your family. I just finished the Advisor Survey trip. One thing that wasn't in the survey, but I wanted you to know, is how much we enjoyed our conversation over that 2-hour period. It was professional, but also relaxed. You know what I mean. For me, it made the time fly by. I plan to call you when it's time to renew my driver's license. Maybe even before then. So take care of yourself. Keep in touch.

Hi Katia, thank you so much for showing us how beautiful our country is. Dan, Mandy, Emily, Abby, Bill, and Claire really enjoyed all the places you took us to. When we get together in the summer, we will put all the photos we took into a video and on our flash drives to show our friends. If others are interested in visiting Panama, I will give them your information. We all agree that you are a MAGNIFICENT "Tour Guide". Thank you so much again and may God bless you.

We had a great time and everything was well organized. The bungalows are very, very rustic. More than we expected, but it was very beautiful. 4 days was perfect. So thank you, and we are happy to recommend it to other travelers. Greetings.

Hello Katia, my wife and I had a very pleasant stay in Panama. Thank you very much to you and Miguel for extending a warm and friendly hospitality. Thanks again for sharing Panama with us for a couple of days. Greetings.

Bob y Stephanie Woerner

We Had a Blast! Since we only had a couple of days in Panama, we arranged for Katia (Kats Tours) to give us a city tour from the moment we were picked up at Tocumen Airport. We didn't waste a single moment. Katia was great and very informative. She even arranged for us to transit the Panama Canal. That's what we were looking for and we found it here. THANK YOU!

Mague

We Got Back to San Francisco Just Fine! I didn't feel like we had enough time to sightsee in Panama. It was a wonderful visit, but next time we'll stay longer... there's so much more to see and do! We had an incredibly good time with Alex on the Gatun Locks and Fort San Lorenzo Tour. We received a lot of information and it was a great idea to just take the partial transit of the Panama Canal the day before, as that way we wouldn't be so exhausted. We enjoyed the wildlife watching tour very much. With a bit of luck, I'll try to come back to Panama in time for the celebration of the canal's centennial and the new expansion. I'll come with other members of my family! I will definitely contact you again for all the arrangements and coordination. It was very helpful to coordinate everything with you in advance. Congratulations on your baby and I hope to meet you next time!

Take care and we'll stay in touch! I'll recommend Kats Tours to my friends who are planning to visit Panama! Best regards.

Liza

The hotel had arranged private transportation for me from the airport since I don't speak Spanish, I was tired, the airport was super crowded, and it was raining... it was a good idea. It was a good decision to have someone pick me up, and that whoever picked me up (Katia from Kats Tours) spoke perfect English.

So I had the opportunity to ask questions and get a lot of information about the history of the city.

With Katia I booked a tour to visit the Panama Canal. It was very interesting and informative. She learned English in Indianapolis, my hometown... I could talk to her for days.

The Baritoney

Panama Canal Tour. We requested pickup at Tocumen Airport. Just driving through traffic in Panama is an adventure in itself. We left customs and there they were waiting for us... we left immediately. We also organized with them a half-day excursion to the Miraflores Locks and a walk through Panama City with Katia, who did an exceptional job.

Keese

Excellent! If you are interested in taking a nature, historical, or cultural tour, be sure to contact Kats Tours. When I visited Panama, I stayed at Las Clementinas and that's where I met her. She is a wonderful young woman named Katia. She really knows what she is doing and is probably the best guide or travel advisor in the city. See for yourself at www.katstours.com
